 07/11/2015 - 04:04

Kenneth Malonen, of the Ring of Steel Action Theater and Stunt Troupe, holds a sword and shield. The troupe will perform several times Saturday at Mill Pond Park during the Saline Celtic Festival.

Snooze and you lose: the skies are shining tartan and plaid over Mill Pond Park today, as the Saline Celtic Festival gets under way for hours of fun and family friendly activities.

The gates open at 8 a.m., and morning activities include the Mastodon Celtic Challenge obstacle course, Highland Dance competitions, living history re-enactments, food, merchant village, and textile arts tent.

The official opening ceremonies are at 11 a.m.; followed by an afternoon of children’s activities, music and dance, jousting, Highland Athletics, pipe bands, sheepdogs demonstrating herding, falconry, and much more.

Stone Clover, Nessa, The Tosspints, Dragon Wagon, Equinox, The Waxies, Corktown Popes, Brother Crowe, Peat in the Creel, Raven Song, Roane, and Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic will fill the park with music till late evening.

Enjoy Celtic performances from the Tartan and Thistle Scottish Country Dancers, Ensoleil, Nutshell Trio, Damsha Ulsce Ban Mor, Ann Arbor Celtic Harpers, Commonwealth Dance Collective, Irish Dance Company of Lansing, Dancin’ with Delia Irish Dance School, Dancin’ Feet School of Gaelic Culture and Dance, and Ann Arbor Morris Dance.

Other activities include Wee Folks Island, brave “Princess Merida,” Millie the Mill Pond Monster, falconry, a laser show after dark, a thrilling zip line ride ($10) and food and drink, including Michigan craft beers.

Tickets at the gate today are $15 for adults; $5 for ages 13-17; free for active military, for ages 12 and under, and ages 65 and up.

Parking is available at Saline Middle School (includes handicap parking), Liberty School, and parking lots downtown, with free shuttle buses running continuously.
