(From Saline City Manager Todd Campbell)
The first week of the Michigan Ave Project is nearly complete with relatively few issues. However, week two will bring some significant changes. The contractor will end the first week with paving of the temporary widening along the north side of Michigan Ave near the Monroe Street intersection on Saturday, April 30th.
Week of May 2nd
Beginning Monday, May 2nd at 7am, east and west bound traffic will be shifted to the north half of Michigan Avenue from the bridge deck to the Maple/Old Creek intersection (one lane in each direction). The contractor will begin working on the south half of Michigan Avenue. A major change that is also beginning at 7am on Monday, May 2nd is that Monroe Street will be closed from Michigan Avenue south to W. Henry Street. There will be a detour route put in place because of the short-term Monroe Street closure to install storm sewer (please follow the signs). W. Henry and E. Henry will continue to be open to two-way traffic for this portion of the project.
The contractor will begin pavement removals on the south half of Michigan Ave beginning Tuesday, May 3rd. The contractor is scheduled to bring in a cold milling machine to remove the asphalt that is over-top of a concrete base. Once the asphalt is removed, the contractor will begin removing the concrete base; eventually making a 49” deep cut the whole length of the project. The contractor will also begin storm sewer work.
Note: There has been a change to the DTE gas main relocation. The gas main relocation is expected to take another six weeks to complete the work. Also, the Henry Street detour for eastbound Michigan Ave traffic is not scheduled to be implemented until sometime in late May 2016. Lastly, the street lights have been removed at the west end of the project area so you will notice that it will be darker in this part of the project. The new street lighting system won’t be installed until the end of the project.
Please stay tuned for updates as the Michigan Ave project moves forward. The City of Saline staff will be providing a minimum of weekly updates and sometimes daily depending on what is taking place in the construction zone.
