Saline High School student Ian Schwenke, who won the American Welding Society’s annual High School Welding competition in April, placed fourth at the 14th Annual Local 169 Boilermakers High School Welding Competition.
It was the highest-ever finish by a student-welder from the South and West Washtenaw Consortium. More than 40 welders from Michigan competed in the event, held at the local’s training facility in Allen Park.
Instructor Stephen Hasselbach said the contest included a rigorous written exam and intense welding project. Schwenke was in second place after a panel of judges conducted a “cut and bend” test.
“Ian continues to do well and is now focused on taking a medal at the upcoming SkillsUSA National Championships in Louisville this coming June,” Hasselbach said.
