Baseball: Saline Splits Doubleheader At DCC

Richard Hovde drove in four runs for the Hornets in the opening game at DCC.

Saline saw its winning streak come to an end at Detroit Catholic Central Friday.

Saline won the opening game 12-1 before falling 3-2 in the night cap. Saline had won 13 straight games.

In the opener the Hornets jumped on DCC Pitcher Brendan Kassa in the first. Saline put up six runs in the first inning. Zach Schwartzenberger had two of the four Hornet hits in the inning. Richard Hovde drove home Jake Finkbeiner in the second.

The Hornets had another bat-around inning in the fourth with Thomas Miller, Cole Daniels and Michael Schuby hitting singles. Hovde’s two-run double was the highlight of the five-run inning.

Hovde finished the game 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Schwartzenberger and Schuby each had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Finkbeiner also had two hits.

Ted Eppinga started and won. He gave up one hit, one walk and no runs in three innings. He struck out three. Sean Millspaugh gave up three hits, a walk and one run in two innings of relief. He walked one.

Saline’s streak ended in the nightcap when DCC scored in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Matt Stinebiser’s two-out single drove in Matt Harding, who reached base on an error to lead off the inning.

Starter John Holt allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. Reliever Tyler Zmich gave up one unearned run on two hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Saline scored in the first inning when lead-off hitter Ryan Foley tripled to center-rightfield and then scored on a sacrifice by Jake Finkbeiner. DCC got it back in the bottom of the inning. Dante Toppi singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fourth the lead-off hitter Marcus Cipriano walked and then scored when Harding reached base on an error.

In the sixth, it was the lead-off hitter doing the damage again. Foley reached on a bunt. He storle second and then scored on a single by Millspaugh to tie the game at 2.
