Steve Bastien, a 2012 graduate of Saline High School, set a University of Michigan decathlon record in Athens Georgia April 6-7. Bastien, in his first ever decathlon for the Wolverines, finished with 7417 points – five better than the 7412 points posted by Kurt Reichenbach in 2013.

Bastien also shares a new record with his father, Gary, who was a two-time All American at EMU. Together they’ve combined for 7844 points – a new father-song American record, according to MGoBlue’s article on the feat.

Breaking records is nothing new for Bastien. He holds the Saline High School record in the long jump (24-2.25) and pole vault (15’0). He also teamed with matt Goeman, Garrick Roemer and Tom Eby to set the school 800 relay (1.28.71). And he joined Matt Elms, Roemer and Spencer Bishop on the record setting 1600 relay (3:20.18).
