After Going 3-2 at Weekend Tournament, Saline Softball Splits With Dexter

Emily Baldus threw two shutouts Friday and was named to the all tournament team.

After going 3-2 in a weekend tournament, the Saline varsity softball team returned to action Monday, splitting a doubleheader with Dexter. Dexter won the SEC crossover game, 4-2. Saline won the second game 14-12.

Saline slugged 10 hits off the Dexter pitcher, including a home run by Olivia Darmos, but managed only two runs. Emily Baldus allowed 10 hits and a walk in six innings. She gave up two home runs and struck out three.

Saline left the bases loaded in the second and fourth and ran themselves out of another inning.

Kelsey Alexander went 3-for-4. Ashley Heren was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the nightcap, scored five runs in the seventh to win.

Katherine McCollum (4-for-5, two doubles, homerun, 4 RBI, 4 runs) and Brooke Bauer (1-for-4, homerun, 3 RBI, 3 runs) homered for Saline.

Oliva Darmos and Anna-Jo Stuart also had two hits each.

Emily Baldus won the game in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh. Katherine McCollum pitched six innings and gave up 12 runs, only three of which were earned, on 13 hits and two walks.

Dexter led 5-0 after three innings. Saline got three back in the fourth thanks to a McCollum single and three Dexter errors. Saline exploded for five runs in the fifth to take the lead, 8-6. Stuart led off with a double and Alexander reached on an error. Both scored on McCollum’s homerun. Darmos doubles and scored on Bauer’s homerun. Dexter scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 9-8.

Saline tied the game in the sixth. McCollum doubled, took third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bauer. Dexter scored three in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-9.

Saline scored five in the ninth. Cameron York led off with double. Ashley Heren reached on an error. Alexander reached on an error. McCollum, Darmos, Amanda Enners and Anna Kincaid had hits to keep the rally going.

Over the weekend, Saline went 4-1 at a tournament in Ann Arbor.

On Friday Saline defeated Jenison, 10-0. Baldus went six innings, giving up just one hit and two walks. She struck out two. Bauer paced the attack with a homerun, two doubles and five RBI. Darmos was 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Alexander went 2-for-3.

Saline followed that with a 2-0 win over Lakeshore. Baldus scattered eight hits and walked none as she struck out seven for her second shutout of the day. Saline scored both runs in the fifth. Stuart walked and Alexander singled. Both scored on a single by Bauer.

Saline returned to action Saturday with a 9-4 victory over St. Mary Catholic Central.

Baldus allowed four runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk in five innings. She struck out three. All of St. Mary’s runs came in the second inning. Stuart led the Saline attack, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Darmos went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Enners went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Hornets fell to St. Claire, 10-0. Starter Elaina Height took the loss for the Hornets. Amanda Enners had two hits for Saline, which managed just five hits on St. Clair pitching.

Saline dropped the final game, 8-5, to Dakota, the top ranked team in the state.

Bauer and Baldus were named to the all-tournament team.
