Deliveries will be prohibited in front of Benito's Pizza, at 100 S. Ann Arbor St. between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. as a result of a new traffic order approved by Saline City Council last Monday.
The order was recommended by Saline Police Chief Larry Hrinik. Hrinik said the owners of Benito's Pizza complained about large delivery trucks parking in front of their new location and requested a remedy to the situation.
“They've talked about having outdoor seating that customers would use at lunch hour, and nobody is going to want to sit there with a semi-truck parked in front of them,” Hrinik told council.
Hrinik discussed the situation with owners of Mac's Acadian Seafood Shack, Brecon Grille, Mangiamo Italian Grill, My Favorite Cafe, Maureen's Designs and Waggles N Whiskers. Two of the restaurants compliled a list of delivery days and times. From the list, Hrinik determined that most deliveries occurred outside the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. window. Delivery trucks operating during this time can use the municipal lot 4, west of Waggles N Whiskers.
Hrinik said that all the parties agreed to the solution.
Mayor Brian Marl asked Chief Hrinik if he doubled back to talk to the other businesses about the change. Hrinik responded in the affirmative.
The new order states that there is “No Parking” in the commercial loading zone from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Delivery vehicles can park for up to 30 minutes.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., it would be a no parking zone.
Marl said he was concerned that if the city limits parking to 30 minutes, it will enforce the standard.
“If that proves problematic, I would be interested in your thoughts on how that would move forward,” Marl told Hrinik.
