Saline’s girls cross country team won its 13th straight regional championship Saturday at Lake Erie Metropark.
Running on a windy day and wet course, Saline place four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 to finish with 42 points – 14 better than second place Woodhaven and 23 better than third place Pioneer.
The victory automatically qualifies Saline for the MHSAA Division 1 finals at Michigan International Speedway Nov. 1. The girls race at 3 p.m.
Hannah Cummings finished second in 19:03.2 seconds. Cummings ran with Pioneer freshman Anne Forsyth for most of the race but Forsyth opened a late lead and Cummings couldn’t catch her. Instead, the Saline junior held off Wyandotte Roosevelt’s Robyn Loselle, who finished third in 19:04.2
Fellow junior Gillian Walter finished seventh in 19:47.5. Senior Abby Rentschler was eighth in 19:57. Freshman Jessi Larson made the all-region team in her first outing. She was 10th in 20:11.5. Lillie Phelps completed the Hornet scoring with a 15th place finish in 20:46.
Sophomore Hannah Fisher was 21st overall in 21:10. Haleigh Cummings was 26th in 21:35.
Last week the Lady Hornets won the SEC championship for the 19th straight year.
