Kids Play Firefighter, Learn Safety Lessons at SAFD Open House

A future firefighter or two may have begun unofficial on-the-job training Sunday at the Saline Area Fire Department Open House.

Harris Street was closed between Michigan Avenue and McKay Street, giving kids plenty of room to explore fire engines, shoot fire hoses and learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

Kids also learned fire safety lessons from Firefighter Kevin Dillen in the smokey Fire Safety House.

Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said he wasn't sure exactly how many people attended the annual event, but guests ate nearly 18 dozen doughnuts.

"The cider is down to one gallon. The doughnuts are down to a dozen and a half. We've had a good day," Hoeft said.

The open house is a Fire Prevention Week tradition.
