BASEBALL: Saline Suffers First SEC Loss, Bounces Back with 15-1 Win

 05/10/2016 - 01:39

Thomas Miller strikes a two-run double in the fifth inning of Monday's victory over Huron. Miller had six RBI in the game.

Coming into Monday’s doubleheader at Ann Arbor Huron, the Saline varsity baseball team was ranked top in the state and unbeaten in the SEC Red. But recently Saline coach Scott Theisen has been displeased by flat efforts and sloppy play.

Monday, it caught up to the Hornets. Huron, which entered the game with a 1-8 record in the SEC, stunned the Hornets, 2-0, in the opener. Saline rebounded to crush Huron Skyline 15-1 in the night cap.

“They didn’t hit us hard and Cole Daniels through pretty well for us. But we just didn’t hit the ball. It goes back to what I said last week. We weren’t prepared. You can’t just come out and expect to win,” Theisen said. “We’re coming up on the playoffs and one off game is all it takes. We saw that last year at the regional.”

Huron struck first in the opener. Brandon Cooper and Mac Hurley opened the game with singles. With one out, Tyler Erhardt singled in a run and with two outs Tristan Smith singled home a run.

That was all it took. Cole Daniels and pitched five hitless scoreless innings.

The Hornets had chances. Three times they put a runner on third base but couldn’t bring one in. Clayton Skinner kept the Hornets off balance in his second varsity start, giving up six hits and walking two while striking out four in seven innings of work.

Daniels went six innings and gave four hits, a walk and two earned runs. He struck out six.

Zach Schwartzenberger had two hits and was hit by a pitch. Justin Flanagan hit a double for Saline.

In the second game, Saline found their bats. Thomas Miller (4-for-4, 6 RBI, 2 Runs) started things off with a one-out bunt single. He was erased when Mike Schuby hit into a fielder’s choice. Sean O’Keefe reached base on an error by the shortstop. Jake Finkbeiner scored both of them with a two-out double to deep center. Saline led 2-0.

Hornet starter John Holtz got into trouble in the bottom of the first. He hit Cooper then walked Hurley. Then with two outs he walked Tristan Smith. He thought he got out of the inning with a close 2-and-2 pitch to Ian Schmitzerle. The ump called it a ball and then the next pitch was high. The bases-loaded walk forced in a run. Theisen called Josh Nelson in from the bullpen.

“One of the nice things about having O’Keefe back (from injury) is we can call in Nelson and not have to worry about what we’re going to have left for Wednesday’s game,” Theisen said.

Nelson induced the next hitter into a groundball at third. Finkbeiner tagged the base for the force to end the threat. Saline led 2-1.

Nelson went 3 1/3 innings, walking one, hitting one batter, striking out four and giving up a single. He gave up no runs. He earned the win.

Saline scored four more in the second. Daniels walked. Ryan Foley bunted him to second. Cal Livsay reached base on an infield hit. With two outs and two strikes, Thomas Miller laced the first of his three two-run hits.

“One of the things I was really happy with today was the way we came up with big hits with two outs,” Theisen said.

Schuby singled and then O’Keefe singled to score Miller.

Finkbeiner followed with his second RBI double to centerfield. Saline led 6-1.

In the third, Saline scored two more. Daniels walked and stole second. Foley walked. Livesay loaded the bases with a bunt single. With two outs, Miller stroked another two-run single.

The Hornets put it away in the fifth. Livesay led off with a single. Zach Schwartzenberger doubled.

Miller followed with a two-run double.  Schuby singled to put runners on the corners. Ted Eppinga doubled home one run.

Finkbeiner followed with his third RBI double of the game to drive in two. Justin Flanagan doubled in a run.

Sean Millspaugh put the River Rats down 1-2-3 in the fifth to end the game by mercy rule.

Saline is now 10-1 in the SEC Red.
