The numbers from Washtenaw County Public Health tell the story:
In 2013-14, the highest number of flu-related hospitalizations in any week was 20. The total for the year was 116. The most recent weekly tally, for the week ending Dec. 27, showed 78 hospitalized for flu-related reasons. There have been 214 hospitalizations so far.
In 2013-14, the highest number of lab-confirmed influenza cases in a week was 72. That number has been at 270 for the two most-recently tallied weeks.
There have been four flu-related deaths of adults already – as many as 2013-14
According to Washtenaw County Public Health, influenza A/H3 is the chief culprit and there have been sporadic reports of influenza B.
The good news is that local pharmacies have flu shots in stock.
Jensen’s Community Pharmacy offers the vaccination (prevention for $30. Saline Pharmacy offers the flu shot for $24.99. Sometimes insurance will cover the vaccination. Both pharmacies are well stocked with Tamiflu, the popular flu treatment.
