Five candidates applied for the open position on Saline Area Schools Board of Education before Tuesday afternoon's deadline.

Paul Hynek, Smita Nagpal, Heidi Pfannes and Tim Austin applied to fill the vacancy created when Trustee Amy Cattell resigned earlier this month. The Saline Post learned a fifth candidate applied before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The district's Board of Education will meet tonight to outline a process and review candidates. A decision could come as soon as tonight, though the board may decide to have interviews and choose a candidate at a later date. Board policy dictates a new trustee must be appointed by Feb. 7, within 30 days of Cattell's resignation.

Hynek, a technology consultant, finished third in the November election that put Karen Delhey and Diane Friese on the board. He has previously served on the board. Nagpal, a licensed psychologist and co-owner of Still Waters Counseling, finished fourth.

Pfhannes recently moved to the district from Mattawan, where she served on school board from 2006 until 2012, when her family moved to Saline. She was appointed to the board in 2006 and then re-elected in 2007 and 2011. She works in marketing for Kingscott & Associates.

Austin is co-owner of A&H Lawn Service, a company he co-founded with Brandon Hertel in 1991. He is a native of Saline.
