The community is encouraged to attend a public forum to discuss the possibility of using the shuttered Houghton Elementary School as an arts and culture center.

The first of two public forums takes place at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24 at Stone Arch Arts & Events, located at 117 S. Ann Arbor St.

The forum is being held by the Saline Arts and Culture Committee. According to member Nancy Byers, the committee is just starting a conversation.

“The Arts and Culture Committee’s role in this is simply as a catalyst to initiate discussion. We are not the drivers with an outcome that we’re pursuing,” Byers said. “If an idea of using Houghton School as a cultural hub takes flight, any plans or visions will come from the forums.”

A second forum is scheduled for Feb. 5.

No sources of funding for any project have been identified.

The idea of an arts and cultural center grew from recommendations made by the Arts Alliance in the Washtenaw County Cultural Master Plan and Saline Area Working Plan.

The building was closed by Saline Area Schools in 2010 to save about $600,000 annually. The school district still owns the building.
