Saline High School senior Ryan Whitfield is one of seven academically talented students who have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. Also earning the honor from Saline are Patrick Zetterholm, Allison Collins, Louisa Antonelli, Jessica Lipa, Kelly Hall and James Corcoran.

Here's a little more about Ryan Whitfield, one of the top students at one of America's top high schools.

Parents: Paul and Cheryl Whitfield

Favorite Subject: Any science class because I love to do experiments showing what we learn in class happening in real life.

Favorite Teacher: Mr. Gumenick because he liked to spend a lot of time talking about about political news and debating topics instead of just lecturing all hour.

Favorite School Memory: My sophomore year after finishing our AP test, we made ice cream in AP Chemistry. It was really fun even though my ice cream tasted terrible.

Senior Year Goals: To have fun and do as many school activities as I can since this is my last opportunity.

College Plans: Engineering at either Michigan or Stanford

Career Aspiration: Aerospace Engineer
