Organizers leading the community's fight against cancer are making it easier for Salinians to join the fight. They're recruiting anyone and everyone to join Team Saline at this year's Relay for Life event, which takes place June 28-29 at Liberty School, 7265 N. Ann Arbor St., in Saline.

So far, 11 teams have signed up for the relay, raising more than $11,000. Organizers of the relay want to make it easier for people to participate. In the past, many teams have been sponsored by employers or organizations.

Gretchen McCann, Jeff Dowling, Sasha Zarins and Karen Ragland appeared before Saline City Council Monday night to extend all residents the invitation to join Team Saline.

Dowling, who survived a battle with leukemia, is the captain of Team Saline.

“We built this team for people who don't have a place to go but who want to participate,” Dowling told council. “Our goal is to have 400 people walking around the track.”

McCann explained to council that she took on a leadership role with the Saline Relay for Life after seeing several loved ones diagnosed with cancer.

“(Joining Relay for Life) seemed like a perfect way to express my unhappiness with the situation,” said McCann, who volunteer to make breakfast on the day of the event and special treats for cancer survivors.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. But it's also a great community event, she said.

“This event is about fundraising. But it's also about fun, entertainment, bonding and sharing. There are also tears and sadness,” McCann said. “In the end, it's about honor and awareness.”
