Recknagel Leads Saline to SEC Victory

Junior Max Recknagel scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Saline defeated Monroe 53-47 Friday.

Saline won its first SEC Red game of the year and improved to 7-4 overall.

Senior Reece Dils added 15 points and five assists. Saline was 20 of24 from the floor. The Hornets also won the battle of the boards, 27-17.

Saline led 12-10 after Caleb Luckett’s basket with 24 seconds left in an evenly matched first quarter. Recknagel scored six points in the opening frame.

Late in the second quarter, the Hornets were up 18-16 when they began padding their lead. Dils, Hendrickson, and Recknagel shot baskets in a 93-second span to give the Hornets a 24-18 lead. After a basket by Monroe’s Riley Wood, Luckett’s three-pointer made it 27-18. Monroe’s Raynard Pouncy sank a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in the half. Saline led 27-21.

Saline had led 38-28 with 2:52 left in the third when Monroe charged back into the game. Monroe went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and then took the lead early in the fourth, 40-39, on a basket by Pouncy.

Saline regained the lead with baskets by Dils and Recknagel. Saline was never behind again, but Monroe continue wouldn’t fold. Wood’s three point shot with 1:23 left cut the lead to 49-47. Erik Jacobsen responded 13 seconds later with a basket. Dils iced it with two free throws.
