Chief Craig Hoeft and firefighters from the Saline Area Fire Department will serve around 600 chicken dinners from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Summerfest.
For $9, diners get a half chicken, cooked on Deputy Chief Charles Schaible’s custom-built cooker, a dinner roll from Benny’s, chips, coleslaw and baked beans (replacing last year’s radish).
“They go pretty fast. We always sell out. We say we hold the dinner from noon to six. But if you want a chicken dinner and you wait much past 4 o’clock, you’re taking your chances,” Hoeft said.
Diners are invited to buy a chicken dinner and beverage and watch the free entertainment provided by Summerfest.
For those who want to the chicken dinner to go, drivers can pull up in front of Benny’s for service.
The annual chicken dinner is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Saline Area Fire Department, which supports the fire department by purchasing important equipment.
Last year, the funds helped the department purchase a thermal imaging camera. A few years ago, the department used the funds to purchase an all-terrain vehicle.
After a few years of purchases, this year’s chicken dinner will help replenish the fund.
