The Saline Hornets boys lacrosse season ended on Tuesday night as the Northville Mustangs broke open a tie game in the second quarter and the Hornets were unable to recover.    Northville won the regional quarterfinal, 12-2.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when freshman Tanyr Krummenacher found a cutting Tom Needham with a pass 40 seconds into the game and Needham ripped it past the keeper from 8 yards out. A tight defensive struggle followed until finally broken when Northville scored twice within 90 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with 5 minutes left in the first quarter. The defenses on both sides buckled down again as the quarter ended 2-1 Northville. Saline struck quickly in the second period, again scoring at the 11:20 mark as senior Noah Kreitz found Jay Graden cutting in front of the net and Graden converted for his team high 40th goal of the season to knot the score. A few minutes of tough defense on both sides was ended when Northville scored at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Three more Mustang goals followed as Northville built a 6-2 halftime lead. A Hornet penalty early in the third gave the Mustangs a man advantage, which the Mustangs converted to pull ahead 7-2 with 9:28 left in the third period.  Northville added another goal a minute later before the Hornets mounted an extended offensive surge but could not get one past the Northville keeper as the score remained 8-2 at the end of three.

The Mustangs added four more goals in the final period and kept the Hornets frustrated on offense to earn the 12-2 victory to advance to play Detroit Country Day in the MHSAA playoffs.

The Hornets end their season with a record of 11 wins and 7 losses in head coach Ryan Crawford’s second season at the helm.  While the Hornets will lose 18 seniors to graduation, they have a number of experienced varsity contributors returning and JV coach Dan Cain’s squad that went 14-2 in 2016, so the future looks bright for Saline boys lacrosse.
