The award-winning Andrew Collins Trio from Toronto is bringing their CD release tour to Stony Lake Brewing on June 9, Acoustic Routes Concerts announced today. The music starts at 8 p.m.
It's impossible to put a label on Collins, a five-time JUNO (Canada’s Grammy) nominee and seven-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner. "Newgrass" might be the closest because he blends bluegrass, jazz, folk and chamber-oriented roots music with a dizzying array of instruments, including mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello. His instrumental virtuosity and smooth vocals merge with the rich talents of Mike Mezzatesta (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, mandola) and James McEleney (bass, mandocello and vocals).
Their new CD, "Tongue & Groove," is a work of impeccable workmanship, grafting 11 vocal cuts (tongues) to 11 instrumentals (grooves). Each cut is milled to perfection and represents a back-to-basics visitation on what the band does best -- spontaneity and rapid-fire, improvisational exchanges.
Critical acclaim for the band's new release has been high: “Light of touch, fast of wit, copiously imaginative…Toronto mandolin virtuoso pulls out all the stops,” wrote The Toronto Star. "Simply put, this is a stellar band that resists categorization and one that will expand the listener's range and appreciation of style," said Earshot. R2 Magazine added, "Raw and grooving bluegrass music played with the grace and sophistication of a classical string quartet."
