Saline, MI (05/17/17) - “Art Around Saline” was initiated by the City of Saline Arts & Culture Committee (Consisting of Cindy Baxter, Aramide Pinheiro-Boatswain, Katherine Daugaard, Kathleen Krone, Marci Cameron, Linda TerHaar, Heidi McClelland) and is a joint project with Saline Main Street. Four large framed prints of art have been installed on the exterior walls of Saline downtown businesses. The goals of this new and unique project are to enhance and promote public art within the City of Saline, highlight the work of local artists, and increase and enhance pride in the city and its growing art culture.
Cindy Baxter, the Chairperson of the City’s Arts and Culture Committee, noted that the “Art Around Saline” project was one that would be a great way to show case the work of our local artists. As the Committee members considered linking to the Saline Sesquicentennial and also to the Detroit Institute of Art’s Inside Out program, the idea of focusing a display of local artists’ work downtown was formed. “It was great the way the committee picked up on the concept, researched similar programs like the DIA Inside Out and Howell’s Public Arts Initiative Art Project and really jumped into this project whole heartedly. The idea of public art display had been percolating in the back of my mind for a few years, and as a longtime interest of mine, I’m very proud of what has been produced.
“As the project started to take shape,” Baxter added, “we felt it was an important goal to make it a sustainable, long-term community project. That goal lead us to approach Saline Main Street to partner in the project. “
The Call for Artists went out in January and the jury selection process was completed by mid-March. Twelve artists submitted 25 original works for the jury. The selected works will remain on display for a year. The plan is for an annual competition with rotating pieces and additional sites.
The four artists of the selected artworks and their locations are:
“Birds of a Feather #3” by Kay Cassill – Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack
“Sutherland-Wilson Farm” by Sandra S. Difazio – Pineapple House
“Great Egret” by Nancy Murray – Brecon Grille
“Golden Light” by Jill Stefani Wagner – The Grossman Building
The Arts and Culture Committee and Saline Main Street would like to thank property owners and business managers for their help with installation of this display, Main Street Design Team their participation in the jury selection process, to Bruce Westlake and Cindy Baxter for frame building, and Bruce Westlake and Ron Ely for installation of the four pieces.
