If you’re looking for artsy, fun activities for your kids and teens to do this summer, look no further than Saline’s new Salt Valley Arts!!  The new arts center is staffed by a number of teachers from the former Two Twelve Arts Center, and is carrying on the tradition of summer camps and classes.  Come paint a fairy door, learn Zentangle basics, make a map of Michigan using string and nails, or sign your kids and youth up for one of our many summer camps.

Salt Valley Arts is located in the former Saline Hospital’s Emergency Room, and has filled this space in new and creative ways.  The waiting area and several triage rooms and an old office space have been transformed into classrooms and meeting spaces.  The smell of rubbing alcohol is being replaced with the smells of paint, fused glass, and other art supplies, and the hustle and bustle of creative minds are filling the hallways and rooms!  Salt Valley Arts has partnered with Saline Community Education to do class sign-ups - see Community Ed’s website to sign up for classes, or for more information.

Check out descriptions of the summer camps below, and stay tuned for more fun offerings from Salt Valley Arts!

Leap Off the Pages Reading Camp (Ages 5-9)

July 10-13 10am-12pm

Camp fee: $105

Join us as we dive into reading and explore a different children’s book each day!  The stories will then leap off the pages as students create a project based on each book.  A different medium will be used each day, so students will be able to try their hands at a variety of art media, and leave both with a finished piece and the know-how to build and create more on their own!

Young Architects Camp (Ages 7-11)

July 17-21 9am-12:00pm

Camp fee: $177

Step up to the drafting table and try your hand at being an architect! Learn about different types of architecture, famous architects, and sustainable design. Campers will practice designing as a group, and then plan a house on their own. They will then take their plans to the next level and work with cardboard to build a model of their building design. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and a snack.

Young Architects Workshop (Ages 12+)

July 17-21 1pm-4:00pm

Camp fee: $177

This youth workshop takes architecture to the next level.  We will continue to design houses, and will learn more about sustainable design, tiny houses, collaborative work, and the more technical (but still fun) aspects of architecture!  Students will end the week with a detailed rendering and model of their design.  No previous experience necessary.  Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and a snack.

Theater Camp (Ages 7-15)

August 7-11 9:00am-3:00pm

Camp fee: $342

Come join us for this fun theater camp!  Campers will spend the mornings learning all about acting techniques, how to build confidence on stage, tips for auditions, as well as back-stage work including creating sets and props.  Each camper will also be given a role in an original play that will be performed at Saline Summerfest on August 12.  They will spend the afternoons rehearsing the play and preparing the sets and props for the performance. All campers will take part, either behind the scenes or on stage. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or new to the world of theater, this camp is for you!  Students should bring a water bottle, a snack, and a sack lunch each day.

Create Your Own Comic!

August 14-18

(Ages 6-10) 9am-12pm

(Ages 11-17) 1pm-4pm

Camp fee: $172

Kids and Teens, your comic book career begins here! Students will start the week by discussing various types of comics, from traditional to webcomics, and will look for inspiration for their own characters.  They will then create a character to star in their own comics, and get creating!  At the end of the week, each camper will bring home several completed pages of a comic of their own design, and the inspiration and supplies to keep going!  Older campers will also discuss storyboarding, story arcs, and will create a backstory for their main character.  Younger campers will create some hands-on objects to bring their stories to life!  Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and a snack.
