Ricky Skaggs to Perform at The Ark on March 3

Acoustic Routes Concerts, which has produced more than 70 live music events in Saline since 2013 – first at Mangiamo Italian Grill and now at Stony Lake Brewing – is bringing country music and bluegrass legend Rick Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder to The Ark in Ann Arbor for a benefit concert that is just 22 tickets shy of a sell-out.

Lodi Township resident Jim Cain, the founder of Acoustic Routes, said the concert is called Docabilly! because it falls on March 3, 2018, what would have been the 95th birthday of guitar legend Arthel “Doc” Watson. All profits benefit the Breakfast at St. Andrew’s daily meal program in Ann Arbor, which serves the homeless and people struggling to make ends meet.

Watson, who passed away in 2012, rose from rural poverty in Deep Gap, North Carolina and overcame blindness to become one of the most influential folk musicians of all time. He won seven Grammys over a career that spanned nearly 60 years.

“Ricky will share stories about Doc and play some of his best-loved songs, mixed in with traditional, gospel and bluegrass favorites,” Cain said.

“I loved Doc Watson, I loved his singing, his guitar playing, but more than anything I loved his heart for people,” Skaggs said. “This concert is something Doc would really appreciate, and I do too.”

Opening for Skaggs is singer-songwriter Nathan Bell of Chattanooga, Tenn., who has shared bills with legends like Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal and Norman Blake.  The emcee is Lisa Tucker-Gray, the daughter of long-time Breakfast Program director Svea Gray.

Docabilly! sponsors include General Motors Co., Kirkland & Ellis LLP, The Bank of Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor State Bank, Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, Old National Bank, M.L. Hassett Inc., Michigan Power Rodding, Suburban Chevrolet Cadillac of Ann Arbor, Karen Moeller Design, The Plum Orchard Group and Weber’s Inn.
