Hornets Sweep Doubleheader at Adrian

The Saline varsity baseball team (6-1) swept a doubleheader at Adrian Monday, 8-0 and 10-4.

In the opener, Brett Nearing scattered three hits and a walk while striking out six in a complete game shutout.

The Hornets pounded 11 hits on Adrian’s pitching and took advantage of four Adrian errors.

AJ Korzuck went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Saline. Joey Sweigert was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Trent Theisen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Gage Hammond led off the game with a homerun for the second time this year for the Hornets.

In the third, Saline added four runs. Andrew White reached base on an error. Theisen singled and advanced to third on an error. Theisen stole second. White and Theisen scored on a single by Korzuck. Sweigart singled. Barnett reached base on an error by the left fielder, allowing Korzuck to score. John Malbone singled home the fourth run of the inning.

The Hornets tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Theisen singled and took second on a wild pitch. Korzuck singled, moving Theisen to third. Theisen scored on a balk and Korzuck took third on a passed ball. Hendrickson walked. Sweigart doubled home Korzuck and Hendrickson to make it 8-0.

Saline scored 10 runs on nine hits and five Adrian errors in the nightcapt.

Once again, Hammond (2-for-4, 2 RBI) homered to start the game.  Korzuck (2-for-4, 3RBI) also homered for Saline. Sweigart (2-for-4, 2 runs) also had two hits for Saline.

Saline scored two in the first. Hammond homered to lead of the game. White singled and stole second and third. He scored on a single by Korzuck.

Adrian scored a run on Matt Willis (3IP, 5H, 2R, 3BB, 2K) in the first on a bunt single, single, walk and sacrifice fly.

In the second, Jacob Porada reached base on a throwing error. He stole second. When Thomas Miller reached base on a throwing error, Porada scored, making it 3-1.

Adrian made it 3-2 on a couple hits in the bottom of the inning.

In the third, Sweigart led off with a second. Eric Berki walked. Both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Barnett and scored on a single by Porada. Porada later stole third and then scored by on a ground ball to short by Hammond, making it 5-2.

The Hornets added two runs in the fourth. Korzuck hit a solo homerun and then Sweigart singled and scored on a double by Barnett.

Eric Berki relieved Willis in the fourth and allowed one hit in a scoreless inning.

Michael Hendrickson shut down the Maples on one hit in the fifth.

Saline added to its lead in the seventh. Bryan Homberg reached base on a wild pitch for strike three. He took second on a wild pitch. He scored when Malbone reached base on an error. Malbone scored when Korzuck reached base on an error.

Adrian scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
