Six months after a slightly disappointing run at the state cross country finals, seniors Andrew Kitto and Anthony Lamus ended their high school athletics careers on top.
Kitto and Lamus were joined by Ryan Wilkie and Matt Elms on Saline’s state champion 4-by-800 relay team. The foursome finished the race in 7:47.49, almost two seconds faster than the second place team from Lake Orion. The Saline relay team shaved nearly 14 seconds off its regional championship time.
It was the first Saline boys team to win a state championship relay since Dustin Voss, Neil Atzinger, Alex Muhs and Carter Bishop won the 4-by-800 in 2004.
Kitto also had a strong showing in the 800-mter run, where he finished fifth in 1:54.79. Kitto ran though an injury at the regional, placing second in a time of 1:57.34.
Junior pole vaulter Kaj Althaus was tied for eighth, clearing 13-04.
The 4-by-200 relay team of Jesse Ouellete, Mitch Suddendorf, Skyler Bowden and Tyler Palka finished ninth with a time of 1:30.08. The bested their regional time by .75 seconds.
Grant Praschan was 12th in the 1600 meter run. He finished the race is 9:32.38.
Junior John Smutny was 13th in shot put, throwing 50-11.5.
The 4-by-400 relay team of Skyler Bowden, Matt Elms, Ryan Gauche and Andrew Kitto finished 14th in 3:24.90.
Ryan Gauche ran the 400 in 50.72, which placed him 17th in the state.
