Quenee’ Dale and the Saline 4-by-100 relay returned from Saline as state champions, and the Saline Girls Track and Field team earned the state runner up trophy Saturday at the MHSAA Division 1 finals meet at East Kentwood High School.

Saline finished with 55 points, second to Grosse Pointe South’s 76 points.

Dale, the junior sprinter and hurdler, brought home several medals. In her main event, Dale won the 100-meter high hurdles with ease, finishing in 14.79. Dale opened a lead about 40 into the race and was never challenged from behind. The difference between the times of Dale and the second place runner, Northville’s Morgan Robertson, was .21 seconds, which might not sound like much. But the difference between second place and seventh place was .15 seconds.

Dale helped the Hornets repeat as state champs in the 4-by-100 relay. Dale, Amanda Luurtsema and Alana Hollis were all members of last year’s state champion sprint relay. Alexa Ross replaced Sam Richart on this year’s team, which finished in 48.57 seconds, .11 seconds faster than the team from Pioneer. Saline improved on its regional championship time by more than half a second.

Dale’s other all-state medal came in the 100 meter dash, where Dale placed fifth in 12.63 seconds

Several Hornets also came home with all-state honors.

Randi Bennett achieved her all-state goal in the shot put and discus. Bennett was third in the shot put, throwing 40-4.75. She was fourth in the discus, throwing 121-7.

Elianna Shwyader, Lauren Green, Abby Rentschler and Gloria Park, the regional champs in the 3200 meter relay, placed third at the state meet. They finished in 9:15.92 – more than seven seconds faster than their regional time.

Shwayder, Rentschler and Gillian Walter earned all-state honors in the 3200 meter run. Shwayder finished third in 10:43.58. Rentschler took fourth (10:53.53) and Walter was  seventh (11:01.02). All three girls beat their regional times.

Senior Natalie Wysocki earned all-state honors in the 300 meter hurdles. She finished seventh (45.70 seconds), besting her regionals time by .34 seconds.

They weren’t the only Hornets at the state meet. Amanda Luurtsema competed in the 100 dash. Natalie Wysocki competed in the 100 high hurdles. Alexa Ross barely missed qualifying for the finals heat in the 200 meter dash.

The 200 meter relay team of Autumn Godette, Natalie Wysocki, Alana Hollis and Alexa Ross finished 14th.

Lauren Green and Hannah Cummings ran in the 800 meter run

Gloria Park (17th, 11:16.42) and Alyssa Cummings (28th,11:28.51) competed in the 3200 meter run.

Wendy Szuminski (13th, 10-06) competed in the pole vault.
