Students from the South West Washtenaw Consortium at Saline High School had an outstanding day at the SkillsUSA Regional Welding Competition held at Washtenaw Community College March 1.
The high school student welders spent the day competing against students from Flat Rock and Oakland Schools Technical Campus North East. The SWWC welding team members are from Chelsea, Dexter, Lincoln, Milan, Manchester and Saline. Twelve of thirteen SWWC competitors finished in the top five of their respective categories.
They demonstrated their skills by accurately assembling weldments from blue prints using different thicknesses of metal, welding metal in different positions, and using different welding materials. Their outstanding performances earned them at least one of the top 3 medals in each of the categories at the SkillsUSA Regional Welding Competition. Special Congratulations are in order for the following students as they each advance to the State Level of Competition in Grand Rapids Michigan this April 19-21, 2013:
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) - Luke McCarren (Saline) - 2nd Place Silver Medal
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) - Danny Woolsey (Manchester) - 1st Place Gold Medal
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) - Justin Reyst (Manchester) - 2nd Place Silver Medal
Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW) - DJ Griffin (Milan) - 3rd Place Bronze Medal
Oxyacetylene Welding (OAW) - Matt McCarren (Saline) - 1st Place Gold Medal
Overall - Justin Sly (Saline) - 1st Place Gold Medal
For Justin Sly’s outstanding performance as the Gold Medalist in Overall category he will receive a scholarship equal to one year of tuition and books at Washtenaw Community College. The Overall Competition consists of assembling weldments and welding them using all the welding processes (GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and OAW) along with a torch cutting portion using OxyFuel Cutting. Sly will now compete for a chance to attend SkillsUSA Nationals in Kansas City, MO this June 24-28, 2013.
