Maria Edwards and Megan Walker recently opened a hair salon called Home Town Roots at 401 N. Ann Arbor St., Suite B.

“We worked at another salon together before this, and everything just fell perfectly into place,” Walker said of deciding to launch a new salon together.

The two stylists had been discussing the idea of opening their own business, and when they saw a vacancy at the office building at the corner of Bennett Street and Ann Arbor-Saline Road, formerly an Edward Jones office, the two knew it was time to make the move.

While Walker grew up in Denver and only ended up in Michigan as an adult, Saline is literally Edwards’ hometown. She attended the South and West Washtenaw Consortium cosmetology program in high school (see related story 'Huron Valley Beauty Academy moves to Michigan Avenue location in Saline') to prepare her to earn her license and has been working in the field ever since, except for a break of a few years to raise children.

Besides the owners, two other stylists work at the salon as independent contractors: Rachael Coleman and Brenda Morningstar. The salon offers all kinds of hair services from coloring to up-dos and haircuts, as well as facial waxing.

Walker said the space is small and “cozy” and they don’t anticipate having enough room to branch out into any other services at the current location.

“Our goal is to provide a homey environment where people feel comfortable bringing their families in,” Walker said.

The salon opened for business July 24, and while you might expect a small business is tucked away in the back of a building might have trouble attracting notice, both Edwards and Walker say they benefit from excellent word-of-mouth advertising by satisfied customers.

“Business has been great,” Edwards said.

Hours for the salon are “by appointment only” because each stylist is a private contractor and sets her own hours, but Walker said the salon does accept walk-in appointments.
