Great Gatsby Regatta Benefits Saline Rowing Team

 08/06/2016 - 23:05

Calling all flappers and dapper gentlemen! Take a trip back to the roaring 1920s during the Saline High School Rowing team’s Great Gatsby Regatta on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The F. Scott Fitzgerald-inspired event is held annually to raise funds for the rowing club, build community awareness and recruit new members.

The dinner and wine event takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack in downtown Saline. The night features amazing food and wine, great auction items, a best costume contest and a new boat christening.   This year's silent auction features original artwork, fitness equipment, sporting event tickets and travel packages.

“The Great Gatsby is our only fundraiser of the year,” said Chris Frick, president of the Saline Rowing Club. “This year’s event is also a celebration of the spring season where the team took home medals in seven events at the state championships.”

Attendees are encouraged (but not required) to dress in ‘20s-era garb such as flapper outfits, straw hats and bow ties, or other period attire.  Prizes will be awarded for best costumes.   A photographer will capture attendees next to an antique car.

“It’s always a fun-filled evening with music and games and great food. And it helps our high school rowers to succeed in their sport,” Frick said.

Before and after the dinner, attendees can enjoy vintage music and try their luck in the no-stakes Blackjack Challenge.

The cost of the event is $60 per person or become a sponsor by reserving a table of 8 for $505.  Table sponsors receive special recognition during the event, as well as a gift. Tickets may be purchased online at: https://saline.revtrak.net/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=21

Proceeds from this year’s event will be used toward the purchase additional boats for the ever-growing team.

Saline Rowing is a varsity high school club sport for both girls and boys that competes against Ann Arbor, metro Detroit area and West Michigan high schools. The team is open to high school students including incoming freshmen for the upcoming fall 2016 season.

The team has two competitive rowing seasons: fall and spring. The fall season consists of longer endurance races (like cross country) and the spring season is the sprint season (like track). The team travels out of state once or twice per season to attend regional regattas as well as an international regatta in Canada against the best teams from Canada and the United States.
