The Saline Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Saline Salutes Awards. Nominations were gathered in February and the honorees then selected by a panel of community leaders representing a cross-section of the Saline area. The Saline Salutes Awards, presented annually, are the most widely-respected and prestigious recognition of the citizen contributions from individuals living or working in the Saline area. This year’s honorees are:
Citizen of the Year – Rebecca Schneider. Rebecca has served as the Design Team chair and an SMS board member since its creation in 2012 and currently serves as the Board Secretary. While with Main Street she has managed the Be Bloomin flower basket project as well as co-chaired the Oktoberfest. Rebecca also is an appointee of the City of Saline’s City Officers Compensation Committee, Volunteers at Sunday school and at Saline Schools by reading with Children and helping in class with Erin Zimmer.
Lifetime Achievement – Mary Lindquist. Mary is the owner of The Quilting Season in Saline, has lived a life devoted to the care and encouragement of others. She was a nurse for many years. Her concerns for the needs of the elderly and for the quality of hospice care led her to become the founder and first director of Arbore Hospice in Ann Arbor. She started this project in the summer of 1984 and was finally able to open the building in 1997. There are so many things Mary has her hands in that if I listed them all it would be pages.
Orrin Parsons Distinguished Veteran Award – Paul Schwimmer. Paul is a decorated Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret living and working in the Saline area. He is active in the Saline American Legion and is the Chamber contact for the Color guard in the Christmas parade. Paul spends his free time with History Flight, a non-profit that sends teams around the world in search of missing in action soldiers since WWII. Paul himself has recovered 20 remains of lost American servicemen.
First Responder Award – Kurt Schneider. Kurt is a Saline Area Fire Fighter. He is a Saline native who attended Saline Area Schools from Kindergarten until graduation in 1992.He has been on the Saline Fire Department for 18 years. Schneider is a sergeant in the SAFD. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was deployed in The Republic of Djibouti.
Hometown Hero-Active Duty – Major John J. Sheridan. Major John J. Sheridan currently serves as the Commanding Officer of the 4th Space Company/1st Brigade, which is part of the U.S. Army Space and Missile /Defense Command. He is stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Major Sheridan has earned many awards including a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Metal, and Army Achievement Medal & Navy Achievement Medal. John Sheridan graduated from Saline High School and is married to Cynthia Frank also from Saline. They have three-year-old twins.
Youth of the Year – Melinda McCabe. Melinda has led efforts for the Saline Youth Council Parks & Recreation Teen Forum and The Saline Shovel Snowdown. Each of these events were very well attended by the youth and adults of Saline. Melinda is exceptionally involved in many extracurricular activities in the city, county and school.
These outstanding award recipients will be honored at the 29th Annual Saline Salutes Awards Program on Friday, March 23 at 5:30pm at EHM Senior Solutions Center for innovation & Education. Cost for the event is $22 for Adults, /$40 Couples $20 Senior Citizens (65+) & $12 for Students, ages 6-18, for reservations made by Wednesday March 21, 2018. Included is a reception with entertainment, Carving station, finger foods, appetizers, desserts & 2 drink tickets, and the Awards Presentation Ceremony.
