Self-driving vehicles on display at 2018 "Detroit Auto Show"

As part of my work covering the North American International Auto Show last month, I took note of some autonomous automobiles on the main floor at Cobo Center in Detroit.

While it feels like this segment is about to explode, as far as this exposition was presenting things, much of that still felt just beyond reach. Note the "Experiment" label prominently displayed on the Ford Fusion used to test consumer acceptance of this approach to Domino's pizza deliveries in Ann Arbor last year.

Ironically, front-and-center in the two-story Ford booth here was an original 1968 Ford Mustang driven by actor Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt.

This is a photograph I made of the May Mobility self-driving shuttle at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) last month.

Located in the cordoned off Lingenfelter area, it was positioned rather far back in that space and I had to get special permission to get near it to do my work. "Automobiliti-D" graphics notwithstanding, all of this was on the main floor of NAIAS.

The most obvious difference between this and the NAVYA transport is that it has a definite front and back.

May Mobility is an Ann Arbor-based company that continues to make news this month. Next month, the co-founder and CEO of May Mobility will be a featured speaker at "Autonomous Car Detroit" in Dearborn.
