The 12th annual Saline Oktoberfest kicked off on Friday night. The Golden Keg was not brought in on a horse drawn cart as in years past because of the road construction, but instead was carried about two blocks from the home of Matthew and Rebecca Schneider to the festival area.

Four men in Bavarian attire hoisted poles on their shoulders to carry the keg. They were accompanied by the Schneider children, the Mayor and festmaster Dick Nehring.

Upon arriving at the festival, holders of commemorative steins were given a free pour of beer from the keg. Everyone else had to pay $5 a glass for beer.

Volunteers from Saline Main Street served Budweiser and a variety of German beers. These volunteers included City Councilman Dean Girbach.

Elsewhere, members of the Saline-Lindenberg friendship committee were boiling German sausage in beer and grilling it for customers. They prepared bratwurst and weisswurst, with or without sauerkraut.

Smoke restaurant offered other delectable food items including ribs, pulled pork or brisket sandwiches, tacos and burritos – not exactly German, but delicious.

Benito’s sold pizza, Kiwanis sold hotdogs, the Lions sold ice cream and Busch’s Market offered other choices. But of course the main attraction was the beer.

As the light faded, the band ‘Your Generation,’ formerly ‘50 Amp Fuse,’ took the stage. This eight-member combo performed a variety of popular music from the last several decades with skill and high energy.

The large crowd at the festival swayed to the beat as the band played into the night. More events are planned for Saturday.
