Sgt. Marlene Radzik, Lodi-Manchester Community Sergeant, has 24 years experience with Washtenaw County.

Sgt. Mark Schoonhoven, formerly of Plainwell, Mich., died Jan. 20 from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device on Dec. 15, 2012 in Kabul, Afghanistan.

On Feb. 23, school administrators and friends will jump into icy water at the Big House to raise money for Special Olympics.

The third annual Empty Bowls benefit for Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County takes place Thursday night at Saline High School.

The Saline Area Schools Historic Preservation Foundation and Saline Area Schools have been partnering on a program that stitches together a picture of local history.

The second grade quilt project is in its third year in the school district. Every year, Saline Area Schools second grade students learn about local history as part of social studies curriculum. Foundation member Cheryl Hoeft teaches a lesson about local buildings. Superintendent Scot Graden teaches a lesson on local agricultural history. Then each student is asked to pick their favorite historic building.

Organizers of the Celtic Festival would like to see the event approved so they can negotiate with entertainment.

At Monday's meeting, Saline City Council will be asked to approve the Celtic Festival for July 12-13, 2013. The city owned and organized festival is moving toward independence at the request of city leaders who've been dealing with tighter budgets in recent years.But financial independence is still years away.
