Last fall, Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation mandating that Michigan public school students be provided the opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. The legislation also requires public schools to display the United States flag in each classroom or in another site where kids can recite the Pledge of Allegiance..

What the legislation, which takes effect later this year, did not do is offer schools money to pay for new flags.

The school district has conducted 46 drills so far this year, and 26 more random emergency drills are planned.

As always, our market has an abundance of produce, baked goods, eggs, meat, coffee, honey, maple syrup, and beautiful hand-made items - 20-25 vendors weekly.

Mayor Marl urged members of Saline City Council to attend a meeting at 5 p.m., March 28 at Pittsfield Township Hall. He said leaders from other interested Washtenaw County communities will attend.

The average age of death in Sylvan, York and Ypsilanti Townships starts at 64 years. In contrast, it is over 76 years in Bridgewater Township, Saline and Ann Arbor.

The legislation will fund more than 100 projects in Michigan, including 49 emergency dredging projects.

Enbridge Pipeline is conducting tests in the Saline Area today.

Enbridge Pipelines (Toledo) Inc. is planning to conduct a hydrostatic pressure test on the leased segment of the Wolverine Pipeline, Line 79 Pipeline System, which impacts portions of Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Anyone observing a leak during the testing period is asked to call their emergency line at (800) 858-5253, which is answered 24 hours a day.

So far, St. Andrew's Church and Rotary Club are delivering on Mondays and Tuesdays, but the Senior Center needs groups to help with the other three weekdays.

The Saline Senior Center Winternester Reading program came to an end last week.

The program was a partnership between the Senior Center and Saline District Library. Seniors picked up a reading log at the Senior Center. When they read five books, they earned a prize from the library. After another five books, they were entered into prize drawing.

Nolla loved big band music, playing the piano for her children and grandchildren, dancing, playing cards and being surrounded by her family.

Brother, Solas and Blackthorn will play Saturday at the Saline Celtic Festival. The Mastodon Fun Run takes the place of the Celtic 5K run.

The one-mile along the Memorial Day parade route on Michigan Avenue will benefit Saline Community Education, the Saline Police Department, and an organization that helps veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

Saline’s alcohol-serving establishments were given a pat on the back by City Council member Dean Girbach at Monday’s meeting.

For being "gold medalist" in the overall category, Saline High School student Justin Sly receives a scholarship equal to one year of tuition and books at Washtenaw Community College.
