From fishing to watermelon eating contests, Saturday at Summerfest is a great day to be a kid. Summerfest takes place Aug. 9-10 in Saline.

There are new books in the shop on the humor, travel, foreign language, cookbooks, literature, fine arts, biography, hardcover fiction, history and religion & philosophy shelve.

Residents on the 9500 block of Whispering Pines Drive in York Township woke up to damaged mailboxes Aug. 1.

Children will have the opportunity to create several projects using a variety of materials involving drawing, painting and sculpting elements in a one-day art class offered by Saline Community Education and artist Jennifer Lickers Tuesday, Aug. 6. 

The class will focus mostly on creative learning, meaning the children are in control of their own art.

Michigan state parks invite residents and visitors to a night of spectacular views at "Meteors and S’mores" astronomy programs during the Perseid Meteor Shower from Aug. 9-13.

The Washtenaw County Emergency Operations Center will be conducting a test of 64 outdoor warning sirens at noon, Saturday, Aug. 3.

So far, four nominating petitions have been pulled, but only two have been filed. Voters will elect three city council members in November.

Registration is now open for Junior Hornet Cheer, a volleyball camp, and junior tackle football.

The Department of Natural Resources and The North Face are teaming up to offer Camping 101 at Michigan state parks to educate first-time campers on the basics of camping.

All Saline High School cross country alumni are invited to run the course at Mill Pond Park Saturday morning. 

There's no cost, according to Mike Smith, coach of the Saline High School girls cross country team.

"Just show up and run," Smith said.

The alumni run beguns at 10 a.m.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and earn a semester GPA of 3.4 or better.

Local cyclists are invited to take a two-wheel tour of the town during Saline Summerfest, on Saturday, Aug. 10. The tour caters to hardcore cyclists and recreational riders, offering routes of 12, 25, 37, 50 and 62 miles in and around the Saline area.

The Saline Farmers Market is overflowing with fresh, local vegetables and fruits. Sweet corn and tomatoes are in as well as blueberries, peaches, apricots, plums, cherries and apples, to name just a few.

The rising Saline High School sophomore set several records at the AAU Junior Olympic National Games.

Police continue to investigate the crash that killed two men. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Pittsfield Township Police at 822-4911.
