The Saline boys’ cross country team finished second in one of the largest races of the year – The Spartan Invitational at East Lansing.

Saline tied top ranked Waterford Mott for first with a score of 191 after the first five runners. Waterford Mott won on the tie-breaker – their sixth fastest runner edged Saline’s sixth fastest runner.

Saline coach Carl Spina said it was a tough loss, considering how well the team ran. But it’s a loss they can learn from.


Close to 5,000 people were in attendance at Hornet Stadium for Friday night's varsity football game between Saline and Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Still, with a lot of buzz surround the new and improved Hornets, and a traditional rival in town, Hornet Stadium was as loud as ever.

Saline's defensive forced five turnovers but the offense couldn't make them count, as the Hornets lost their first game of the year.

Bargain hunters, Saline has an event for you on Saturday.

The second installment of the "Saline Resale Circuit" takes place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15 at four resale shops in Saline. Participating are the Saline Community Thrift Store, 789 W. Michigan Ave., The Resale Boutique, 107 E. Michigan Ave., Reincarnations Resale, 109 E. Michigan, and Nu2U, 1311 E. Michigan Ave.


Saline's swimmers and divers took the top 3 spots or more in every individual event.


Emily White shot a 39 and Louisa Antonelli shot a career-best 40.


The Hornets haven't given up a goal in four games.

School board strife continues to be a topic of discussion at the board table.

At Tuesday's meeting, Trustee Craig Hoeft said the start of the school year is an exciting time. He cautioned school board members to be mindful of what they are at the table to do.

President Obama has ordered the flag of the United States lowered to half-staff until sunset on Sunday, September 16, 2012 to honor the victims of the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

“I extend my sincere condolences to the family of U.S. Ambassador John Christopher Stevens, and to the families of all Americans killed in Tuesday’s senseless tragedy,” said Gov. Rick Snyder.

The boy, carrying a 10-inch knife, screamed at police to shoot him. He was tasered and arrested.

Abby Rentschler was the fastest girl in the conference, finishing in 18:52, to lead the Hornets to what was nearly a perfect score. Rentschler was followed in by Elianna Shwayder (2nd, 19:23), Alyssa Cummings (3rd, 19:30) and Gloria Park (4th, 19:30). Freshman Hannah Cummings nearly caught a Huron runner for fifth, but settled for 6th (19:53). Saline finished with 16 points, a single point away from the magical score of 15.

Students will recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Saline Area Schools classrooms each day if a new policy is adopted by the district’s Board of Education in October.


Wednesday, 2012 Sep 12th

The Saline Area Schools policy committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to take up language to that could require students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or perform other patriotic exercises each day. (Vote in Our Poll.)


Saline City Council must now decide whether it will join new county-wide transportation authority and back a millage to fund the plan.


The Lady Hornets volleyball team improved to 5-1 in the SEC.


Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft visited Lansing Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

State Rep. Mark Ouimet invited Hoeft to a special House session honoring first responders.

The ceremony also honored first responders and members of the military who gave their lives in the line of duty during 2011 and 2012.

"It was an nice ceremony. Sadly, the list of people who died in these last two years was surprisingly long," Hoeft said.

Police & Fire

Saline scored eight. Now the varsity soccer team is unbeaten in eight.

Saline's senior Captain Sean Corcoran, Senior Zack LeRolland-Wagner and Junior Jake Cohen each scored two goals in an 8-0 win Tuesday night over Ypsilanti

It was the third straight shut-out for the Hornets. Goalies Liam Foster and Chris Graber split the shutout.

Junior Ryan Lagerquist opened the scoring with a goal on an assist by Senior Captain Andrew Prince. The game ended with 26:35 minutes left in the second half on a penalty kick by Junior Casey Roell.
