The United States Environmental Protection Agency is accepting comments on its plans to allow Paxton Resources to inject fluid underground to drill oil in Saline Township.

Paxton plans to inject produced brine into rock formation 1,850 feet blow the surface through a well near Schill Road, south of US 12 and north of Braun Road on the Jedele property. The EPA is accepting comments on these plans until April 1. Concerned residents can request the EPA hold a formal public hearing.

City of Saline officials plan to communicate their concerns to the EPA. Councillor Dean Girbach said the city should learn from the City of Ann Arbor’s experience with groundwater contamination.

“Between (Gelman contamination) and other things, I think we have to go on the record and oppose this as a city,” Girbach said.

Mayor Brian Marl agreed. However, the city council doesn’t meet again until April 1, the day comments are due. Marl directed City Manager Todd Campbell to draft a response letter and have it reviewed and approved by council members by email. Once approved it will be sent to the EPA.

Comments may be mailed to Felicia Chase, US EPA, Water Division, UIC Branch (WU-16J), 77 W. Jackson Blvd, Chicago, IL, 60604-3590. They can also be emailed to [email protected].
