Fellowship Baptist Church, in Saline, was awarded the mParks Community Service award.
mParks' Community Service Awards recognize individuals and groups who show outstanding support to public recreation and park programs in their community: friends groups, department volunteers, and advocates.
Tom Tengler, senior pastor, accepted the award for the church at the June 18 Saline City Council meeting.
“We are honored and humbled by this expression of appreciation. It’s truly our honor to partner with this wonderful community and add a little more value to our awesome community,” Tengler told council.
Carla Scruggs, Director of Saline Parks and Recreation, said Fellowship Baptist Church has been an important community partner. The church not only sponsors Movie In the Park events, its members volunteer at the event, staffing activities and overseeing the kids.
"Each summer we see a sea of yellow shirted volunteers painting faces, making hundreds of snow cones, helping children make crafts and so much more...What makes this group so special is the commitment of everyone in the congregation, the Fellowship family loves their church and loves their community,” Scruggs said.
Mayor Brian Marl thanked the church for its support of city events. He noted the church is also helpful at the Saline Celtic Festival, where it provides events and activities for youth.
“Over the years, their volunteers have supported our Celtic Festival. I have heard many compliments about your commitment, passion and work ethic,” Marl said.
