There is an exciting new opportunity to play Ice Hockey for high school girls in Washtenaw County this year.
“Girls Ice Hockey is currently offered at three area High Schools, Pioneer and Huron/Skyline (as a combined team, Skyron). These teams are part of the Michigan Metro Girls’ HS Hockey League which follows MHSAA guidelines. Though Ann Arbor Amateur Hockey Association has several girls’ hockey teams, they currently end with a team at the 14 and under age group. This leaves girls’ 15-18 yrs of age without a local hockey option,” said Kathy Wilson of the University of Michigan Athletics Department. “In addition, as girls’ enter high school they are often interested in playing in more than one sport or focusing on several commitments. Doing that in addition to traveling to play hockey is not ideal. There is also no local option for a girl who is new to hockey if she is over 12 yrs of age. And finally, though there are a number of students who have expressed an interest in playing HS hockey they have found that the participation numbers in their individual schools are too low to create a team.
To address this need for all the girls across Washtenaw County, we are planning on organizing a county-wide HS girls’ hockey team for the Winter 2017-18 season which will be run like many current high school club sports. This opportunity would be available to any girl who will be a high school student in the Fall and that is not already eligible for one of the existing teams. We will be holding an informational event on Sunday, June 11th from 2:30-5 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Sign up here for the event and to learn more: http://bit.ly/HSGirlsIceHockey. "
“Our hope is that over time this starter program will generate several new teams for Washtenaw area HS girls. The students have all commented on how important it is for them to receive recognition within their own High School. Our goal is that as participation with this team grows, there will be a natural development of additional, school-specific teams for them to play on,” said Wilson.
The girls will compete in the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League. An informational Flyer is attached, and interested players and parents are encouraged to sign up here.
