Dorotha Russell, 88, Raised 4 Children, Worked as Librarian

Dorotha Jane Russell, 88, of Traverse City passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions surrounded by her loving family.

Jane was born Monday, October 21, 1929 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Earl and Olive (Scott) Cole. Jane married her high school sweetheart, Robert O. Russell on June 5, 1948.

Jane was a homemaker raising four children in Saline before starting her career as a Librarian at the Saline Library before moving to Leland in 1971. There she worked at the Falling Waters Lodge and the Leelanau Enterprise. She and Bob started the Sunset Square Mini-Golf course which they ran for many years. Dorotha semi-retired to the Frugal Farmer vegetable stand on M-22 north of Leland for the summer months and snowbirds to Florida for the winter months. Jane certainly enjoyed life.

Dorotha is survived by her children Steven (Jan) Russell of Saline, Linda Russell (Gary Taylor) of Onstead, Mary (Jeff) Bush of Thompsonville; daughter-in-law Sally Van Vleck of Traverse City; grandchildren Bree (Donny) Carscadden, Jodi Largin, Ella Bush, Katy Olson, Jesse Bachmann; and great grandchildren Russell Carscadden, Anders Olson, Ava Bachmann, Jack Wastell, Chloe Wastell, and Leopold Bourdon.

Dorotha was preceded in death by her husband Robert Russell, her parents; son Robert H. Russell; brothers Hamilton Cole and Richard Cole; mother-in-law Helen Russell; brother-in-law Donald Russell and granddaughter Hallie Wastell.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 2 p.m at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Pastor Chris Cox will officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in the spring.
