Gilbert Walter Luckhardt 96, of Manchester, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018.
He was born November 29, 1921, to Walter Luckhardt and Lydia (Hartman) Luckhardt. On December 24, 1948 he married Betty Chambers.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Karen (Dean) Shuey of Saline, Linda Hough of Manchester, and son Mark (Mary Jane) Luckhardt of Manchester; four grandchildren, Michael Shuey, Michelle Shuey, Brian Hough, and Amy Hough (Craig Lennon). He is also survived by two sisters Arlene (late Lynford) Rentschler and Irene (late Raymond) Jacob and many nieces and nephews. Gilbert was preceded in death by siblings Viola (Nelson) Kreuze, Robert (Esther) Luckhardt, and Andrew (Bonnie) Luckhardt.
After graduation from Saline High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. Gilbert was a member of Manchester American Legion Post 117. He was a self employed electrician, in 1958 founding Freedom Electric Company, and shared his knowledge of the trade leading a 4H club with his brother Andy. Gilbert was a life-long member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Manchester.
There will be a memorial service held at Bethel United Church of Christ in Manchester on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. David Bucholtz officiating. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation from 12:00 Noon until the time of service at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church and envelopes will be available at the service.
