John D. “Mac” McPherson, 87, of Saline, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Mac was a man who enjoyed simple pleasures: the smile of a grandchild, fishing with a cold beer, a quick wit, slow BBQs, leisurely road trips along scenic byways, warm fires, and baking the best chocolate chip cookies around. He was a true gentleman and a man of deep faith who put his trust in God. He lived a full, humble, and generous life, and will be dearly missed.
John was born August 1, 1932, to Alexander and Hazel (Milks) McPherson in Dearborn, Michigan. After graduating from Dearborn High School in 1950, he attended Dearborn Business College before proudly serving in the US Army from 1952-54 during the Korean War, earning several service medals, including a Bronze Service Star.
John spent his career as an accountant and controller, for many years with Traffic Transport Engineering and then on Zug Island for Coke Battery, Tonawanda Coke, and Toledo Coke.
With his former spouse, Patricia Joy Smith, John raised four children: John, Jeff, Joy, and Janet.
In 1995, shortly after his retirement, John married the love of his life, Joan Mercer-McPherson, who also brought four grown children to the marriage, Kathleen, Nelson, Paul, and Linda. Between them, John and Joan were the proud grandparents of 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. John and Joan enjoyed many years of travel together, tending to a substantial vegetable garden, dancing, taking daily walks and bike rides, doting on each other, and spending time with family, friends, and their church.
John was preceded in death by his beloved Joan in February 2019, his son John A. McPherson in 2012, and daughter Joy Taylor in 2014. He is survived by his children, Jeff McPherson of Westland, MI, and Janet (Scott) Oblinger of Garden City, MI, his son-in-law and good buddy, Ron Taylor, of Bath, MI, his step-daughters Kathleen Marsden of Canton, MI, and Linda (Stan) Learman of Saline, MI, and step-sons Nelson (Cindy) Mercer and Paul Mercer, both of Saline, MI, as well as his many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
A Christian memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Saline, MI, on Friday, September 6, 2019, at 11:00 am with Fr. John Linden officiating. Visitation begins at 10:00 am in the church hall followed by the service. The family suggests that any donations be made to Arbor Hospice.
