The Lady Hornets opened their SEC Red basketball season with a 41-33 loss to Bedford at Saline High School Tuesday.

Saline was down 36-33 with possession with a minute to play, but the Kicking Mules held on for the win. Saline fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the SEC Red.

Amanda Zylstra and Melanie Moeller each scored seven points for Saline. Caitlin Ellis added six points and had five rebounds. Moeller also had four rebounds. Nicole Rightowar and Mallorie Sampson each scored 11 for Bedford. Rightnowar also pulled down many rebounds for the Kicking Mules.

Saline head coach Jeff Waltz was unhappy with Saline’s effort.

“We came out flat and we just didn’t do many things very well tonight,” Waltz said. “We’ve had some success up until tonight. But you can’t play like we did and expect to win SEC Red games.”

The Hornets’ shooting was off most of the game (13 for 46). Saline’s defense, especially early, kept Bedford off balance, too. Saline employed a full-court press for much of the first half.

Down 2-0, Zylstra opened scoring for Saline by putting back her own shot. Emily Reyst followed up with a 15 footer from the corner for a 4-2 lead. Bedford scored the next  six points. Zylstra hit a three pointer to make it 8-7. Ellis tied the game at eight with a free throw basket.

Moeller opened scoring for Saline in the second quarter, making one of two free throws. After a basket by Bedford’s Lindsey Shepherd, Moeller took a nice pass from Zylstra and scored two with a lay up to make it 11-10 Saline. Sampson made two free throws to put Bedford out front, 12-11.  With 4:15 to play in the quarter, Sam Bruley sunk a three-pointer to give Saline a 14-12 lead.

But it went south from there. Turnovers, three-second violations and missed shots kept Saline off the board the rest of the quarter. Bedford led 18-14 going into the third quarter.

Ellis scored a couple baskets early in the third quarter for Saline. Down 22-18, Reyst went end-to-end and scored to the applause of the appreciative crowd with 3:15 to play in the third. After a free throw basket for Bedford, Saline made it a one-point game. Melissa Needham missed a layup but grabbed the rebound and fed Jessica Barnes, who put up for two with 2:15 to play.

Down by one, the Hornets had a couple chances to take the lead. But Bedford closed with five points in the final 1:03 to take a 28-22 lead into the fourth.

Bruley got things started well for Saline in the fourth with a midcourt steal and a basket. After a free throw basket for Bedford, Moeller made two from the charity strike to cut the lead to 29-26.

Sampson made a three-pointer that set the Hornets back. But after a free throw by Ellis and a basket by Zylstra, Saline was down 32-29 with 5:01 to play. Lauren Knauss helped Bedford’s cause by making her lay up while being fouled. Rachel Lewandowski converted a steal into two points for a 36-29 lead with 3:19 to play.

Needham’s drive to the hoop and then Moeller’s basket with 1:40 left cut the lead to 36-33, but that was as close as Saline got.

Waltz noted a couple positives from the game. He thought Moeller and Bruley played with intensity. He also noted that as poorly as Saline played, they were in position to win the game late in the fourth.

Saline visits Ypsilanti Friday night.
