The improving Saline High School gymnastics team took another step closer to qualifying for the team regional competition.
Competing at home Wednesday, Saline defeated Troy, 131.75 to 105.1
It was Saline's second straight victory..
Saline coach Mandy Brown said she was happy with her team’s effort.
“There were a lot of things I liked tonight. One of our problems early in the season was staying on the balance beam. Tonight we did well,” Brown said. “We also had several girls compete for the first time tonight. They did a great job.”
When it was all tallied, Saline finished with its top score of the young season. Saline also broke the regional qualifying score for the third time of the season. The Hornets need to reach that score one more time to qualify for a second straight berth in the regional.
Saline scored 34.3 points on the vault. Ericka Tapia led Saline with a score of 8.75. Erika Myers scored an 8.65. Kelsey Grim, Ryann Felton and Kelsey Flanagan each scored an 8.4.
The Hornets scored a 31.8 on the uneven bars. Myers scored an 8.35. Gabbie Ralph scored a 7.925. Katie Tapia (7.7) and Ericka Tapia (7.825) also scored for Saline.
Five Hornets scored 8.0 or better on the balance beam. Myers led with an 8.675. Flanagan scored an 8.45. Ericka Tapia scored 8.175, Ryann Felton scored 8.075 and Sarah Friedrichsen scored an even 8.0.
Flanagan’s 8.3 was Saline’s best on the floor exercise. Myers scored an 8.1. Grim and Katie Tapia figured into the scoring with scores of 7.8.
