Firefighters from Saline and neighboring departments kept a nasty barn blaze from spreading to a home on Judd Road in York Township Monday night.
No people were injured in the fire.
Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said firefighters arrived to find the barn fully engulfed in falmes. Hoeft said firefighters used water to prevent flames from spreading to the home and nearby outbuildings. The two-story barn was destroyed.
Hoeft said the cause is under investigation. It appears the fire began outside the barn, perhaps near a chicken coop. Saline firefighters were in training when called and arrived with an army to control the blaze. They were assisted by firefighters from Milan, Augusta, Ann Arbor and Pittsfield.
Resident Bill Burmeiser said eight people lived at the home on the 10 acre site. His daughter was home when the fire began. She called 9-1-1.
Several chickens may have perished.
