The Saline District Library was closed this afternoon due to a natural gas leak, according to the City of Saline. Maple Road is closed between Echo Court and Woodland Drive.
According to the City of Saline, DTE is advising that gas will be shut off in the area. Repair estimates are three to four hours. City officials are not sure how many customers will be affected.
The natural gas leak is across the street from Saline District library, according to the city.. Construction crews struck a gas main while working on the housing development at 600 N. Maple Road.
A source at the Saline Police Department said there have been no residential evacuation orders.
Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden said evening activities at the middle school have been canceled. They include a sixth grade choir concert and Community Education practices and activities. Graden doesn't believe anyone in the building would be in any danger.
"But we're close enough that we're going to err on the side of caution. We also don't want to muck up the area with traffic while they try to repair the problem," Graden said.
Graden said some students remain in the building after practices waiting for parents to pick them up.
Based on estimates Graden does not expect Saline Middle School classes will be interrupted Wednesday morning.
Fire Chief Craig Hoeft tweeted that children who were at the library after school have been sent to Saline Middle School. (Update: Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden said those students have been picked up by parents).
