Police continue to search for a suspect near Bemis and Warner Roads following a pursuit Monday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m. police began pursuing a black Kia Soul on Eastbound Judd Road near Moon Road.
According to Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Trester, police believed the people in the vehicle were suspects in a recent retail fraud case.
The driver lost control of his vehicle and went through the ditch before stopping in the driveway of Ed Benko on the northwest corner of Warner and Bemis roads.
According to Trester, one suspect was arrested at the scene. Another suspect was arrested during the resulting search. Another suspect was still loose around 5 p.m.
Trester declined to comment on several local reports that the vehicle was a “rolling meth lab.”
“The matter is still under investigation,” Trester said.
(Update: At around 6:15 p.m. The Saline Area Fire Department was dispatched to two hazardous materials calls on Judd Road. One of the calls referenced a sulfuric acid spill relating to a meth lab.)
Ed Benko was busy processing a nine-point buck that he shot Thursday.
“I had the meat grinder going so I didn’t hear anything until I heard the sirens. Then I looked out front and I saw this car that jumped the ridge and missed the power pole and mailbox,” Benko said.
The vehicle came to a rest with an obviously broken wheel right in front of Benko’s “I Support Blue” signs that he displays in support of police.
“I’ve had people take out my mailbox before. But I’ve never seen anything like this around here,” Benko said.
On Facebook, local resident Jamie Williams reported that she saw somebody “running and looking back like they were running from something.”
Law enforcement from Milan, Ypslianti, the Michigan State Police and Pittsfield Township were also helping at the scene. Pittsfield Police tracked suspects with a K9 unit.
