A couple of young animals were killed in a horse barn fire in York Township Friday afternoon.

Just prior to 2 p.m., Saline firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on a private road, east of the intersection of Moon and Bishop roads.

The barn was full involved when firefighters arrived. Horses that stay in the barn were at pasture. But a couple calves and piglets in the barn perished, according to Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft.

Hoeft said the cause of the blaze is undetermined.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from as far south as Dundee.

Firefighters from Pittsfield and Milan supported the firefighting effort with water tankers.
