The Holiday Light recycling drop off box has been set up in city hall. Saline residents have the good fortune of having a place to recycle used, old, burned- out strings of Holiday lights starting on November 18th through January 2018.
The Saline Environmental Commission for the past three years has set up a clearly-marked and brightly lit drop off box in the front entranceway of Saline City Hall to accept all strings of lights.
If you are able, it would be very considerate to tie the lights in bundles or place them in bags – we all know what it feels like to reach your hand into a knotted, knarled mess of light strings.
The Saline Environmental Commission will be responsible for recycling the lights, keeping them out of the landfills. A few of the larger home improvement stores will also accept these lights. Home Depot and Lowe’s participate in these programs.
Never place strings of lights in your recycle bins used for curbside pick-up. These light strings will tangle in conveyors and jam sorting equipment used at the material recovery centers while separating recyclables.
Remember that the front entryway of Saline City Hall also has recycle bins for both types of batteries – the reusable ones and the one-time usage ones.
Bring in your batteries at the same time you’re bringing in those Holiday and tree lights – all properly bundled.
We can all do our part to keep the recyclable items in the recycle stream and out of our landfills.
