On Saturday, November 12, 2016, the first ever Saline Middle School Debate Team competed at the Dexter Delight Debate Invitational with great success. One of the undefeated teams, Shae Murphy and Samantha Dobrowolski, placed first in the tournament; another team, Madeline Hornyak and Sydney Dillon, was also undefeated; and five of the SMS Debaters placed in the top 10 of all speakers.
The middle schoolers debated a topic which states, Resolved: On balance, the benefits of the Internet of Things outweigh the harms of decreased personal privacy.
Coached by Saline Alum and former debater, Mackenzie Hagood, and teachers, Mrs. Staci Nazareth and Mrs. Jennifer Gates, the eighth grade middle schoolers have been meeting twice a week since the beginning of November. The Saline High School Debate Team and coach, Ms. Shelly Venema, have been serving as mentors at each meeting. The next tournament for the SMS Debate Team is scheduled for Saturday, December 10.
