A team of graduating Saline High School seniors received the Thomas A. Burns Memorial Scholarships on Wednesday, April 18th at the Liberty Media Center.
The scholarships were presented to Saline High School seniors Alex Mah, Jaron Stacey, Derek Liemohn, and Tyler Kudlak at the Saline DI end of year banquet. Alex and Jaron will attend the University of Michigan to study engineering. Tyler will also attend U-M and will be studying pre-med. Derek will attend Oberlin College in Ohio on academic scholarship and plans to double major in computer science and history.
The Thomas A. Burns Memorial Scholarship was established in May 2017 to honor Tom Burns, a longtime supporter of Saline Destination Imagination (“DI”). Tom Burns and his wife, Joy, were actively involved in Saline DI for 14 years because of their four sons. His wife was a Team Manager for a number of years while Tom was the "technical adviser" as many of the teams chose technical challenges over the years. He had a large shop in the basement and he offered the use of his tools and spare materials for the kids to experiment with. More importantly he took the time to show the kids how to use tools safely and properly. He helped inspire young minds in the creative process from imagination to innovation. He also used his creative side to design the shirts for Saline DI for 10 years up until his passing. His shirt designs were well known in the state as many people at the tournaments looked forward to seeing Saline DI's unique shirt designs each year. Tom saw the long-term value of creative problem solving for students and strived to support the Saline DI program that had enriched his own children's lives so much.
All four students are receiving this prestigious scholarship because of their outstanding creativity, courage, curiosity, collaboration, and contribution throughout their participation in Saline DI. Alex and Derek served on the Saline DI Board as Student Representatives, and Derek was a co-Team Manager this year with a middle school team.
